Maximilian Beseler , from 1917 von Beseler (born September 22, 1841 in Greifswald , † July 24, 1921 in Berlin ) was a Prussian minister of state and justice, crown syndic and member of the Prussian manor house .

Life

origin

Beseler came from a family in the Duchy of Schleswig . He was the son of the well-known legal scholar Georg Beseler (1809–1888) and his wife Emilie, née Karsten. His brother was Colonel General Hans von Beseler .

Career

Beseler attended high schools in Greifswald and Berlin. He then studied law in Heidelberg and Berlin , where he also received his doctorate. In 1863 he entered the Prussian judicial service as an auscultator , and in 1865 became a trainee lawyer at the district court in Berlin . In 1867 he was appointed court assessor at the higher court and in 1868 at the appellate court in Greifswald.

After his participation as a reserve officer in the wars against Denmark (1864) and Austria (1866), Beseler was drafted again during the mobilization in July 1870 on the occasion of the war against France . First as a platoon leader , later as a company commander in the 4th Guards Regiment on foot , he fought at St. Privat , Beaumont , Sedan and the siege of Paris and received the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

In 1870 he went briefly to the appellate court in Hanover , but immediately became a district judge in Greifswald. From 1874 he was city judge in Berlin. In 1879 Beseler became a district judge and in 1882 he made a career as a director at the Saarbrücken district court , in 1886 at the Düsseldorf district court and in 1888 he became president of the district court in Opole . In 1892 he became President of the Court of Appeal in Berlin I, in 1897 President of the Higher Regional Court in Kiel and in 1904 in Breslau . The following year he succeeded Karl Heinrich Schönstedt as Minister of State and Justice . In addition, Beseler was appointed crown syndicate and appointed to the Prussian mansion for life . In this position he received the Commander's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern in 1916 . The following year Beseler asked for his dismissal as a minister due to reasons of age. Kaiser Wilhelm II complied with this request and awarded him the Order of the Black Eagle on August 6, 1917 in recognition of his long service . With the coat of arms of December 6, 1917, Beseler was raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility .

Death and grave

Max von Beseler died after a long illness on July 24, 1921 at the age of almost 80 in Berlin. He was buried in Cemetery III of the Jerusalem and New Church in Berlin-Kreuzberg . The grave is preserved. Only a small stele marks the grave site.
