List of Prussian ministers of justice .

Modern ministerial administration began in Prussia under Friedrich Wilhelm I. From around 1723, his five ministers were each responsible for specific areas and each province. At the same time, three ministers were given the function of minister of justice; They could only make important decisions collectively ( collegial principle ). The main tasks were nominations for judges, training of lawyers, administration of the judicial system (buildings and personnel), registries (especially the land registers) and advising the king. This system was maintained until 1737, later reactivated temporarily.

The systematic elaboration of statutes began under Frederick II . This task was entrusted to a newly created Grand Chancellor (also known as Senior Justice Minister and Chief de Justice ) in 1747 . At times there was also ongoing administration by other Justice Ministers; especially under the Grand Chancellor Jarriges, who worked with four other ministers. Typical responsibilities of these other Ministers of Justice were the management of the criminal department, the military justice or the administration of justice as well as the supervision of the provincial justice. From 1762 until the 19th century, the “spiritual affairs” (churches and education) were also the responsibility of the ministers of justice ( Zedlitz , Wöllner , Massow ).

With the reforms of 1808/18 , an independent Ministry of Justice was established, which was split into one in 1817

  • Minister of Justice Administration
  • Minister for the Revision of Legislation

From 1848 the organization corresponded to the practice we are familiar with today.

What is confusing is that provinces also had a minister of justice. In addition to the Justice Ministers of the State of Prussia, there was also a Justice Minister of the Province of Prussia (which later became “ East Prussia ”, even more confusing: for historical reasons it was referred to as “the Kingdom”). The provincial justice ministers held the title Chancellor at times . As far as there are articles about them, they are also listed here for better classification .

Remarks

  • Different times are sometimes mentioned in the literature. This is because they refer to provisional assumption of office, appointment by the king and prime minister, formal inauguration; the same applies to a request for dismissal, approval of farewell and transfer of office / appointment of a successor. This can lead to gaps or overlaps, especially in turbulent times and if the predecessor is ill.
  • Other first names were sometimes used during his lifetime, as it later became naturalized in literature. Therefore the full name is given.
