Adolph Leonhardt

Gerhard Adolph Wilhelm Leonhardt (born June 6, 1815 in Hanover ; † May 7, 1880 there ) was a German lawyer. He was Minister of Justice in the Kingdom of Hanover and later in the same position in Prussia .

Life

Leonhardt was the son of an official. After attending the lyceum in Hanover, he studied law in Göttingen , temporarily in Berlin , before he again received his doctorate with distinction in Göttingen. From 1842 he worked as a lawyer in Hanover and published several legal writings. In 1848 he joined the Hanover Ministry of Justice as a scientific "unskilled worker" (a kind of assistant ). In 1863 he rose to the position of Secretary General of the Ministry under Minister Ludwig Windthorst . Shortly before the annexation of the country , he became Minister of Justice in 1865. He worked on new laws on civil and criminal law and the organization of courts.

After the end of the kingdom Leonhardt entered the Prussian civil service. Initially he was Vice President of the Higher Appeal Court in Celle . Only a little later Leonhardt became President of the Higher Appeal Court in Berlin. As early as 1867 he was appointed Prussian Minister of Justice, member of the Herrenhaus and Crown Syndicate . The liberal-minded Leonhardt was responsible for the mortgage law and the land register during his tenure. He was significantly involved at the national level in the drafting of the penal code , the constitution of the courts , as well as the criminal and civil procedure code . Due to illness, he asked for his release in 1879.

Honors

Leonhardtstrasse in Berlin-Charlottenburg has been named after him since 1897.
