Bartholomäus Wilhelm Gommelshausen (born March 6, 1815 in Koblenz , † November 30, 1901 in Kruft ) was a German Catholic pastor and politician.

Life

Wilhelm Gommelshausen attended grammar school in Koblenz until 1836. He then attended the seminary in Trier and was ordained a priest there in 1841. Then he was chaplain in Heimbach and from 1845 to 1849 in Trier secretary in the vicariate general and pastor in the country poor house. In the revolution of 1848/49 he was a leader in the Democratic Association and at the same time in the Democratic Catholic Association, also known as the Pius Association . He was a member of the citizens' committee that called for tax refusal. In a trial brought against him by the government because of the grievances in the Trier country poor house denounced in the press, he was acquitted. In 1849, under pressure from the government, he was transferred to Niederbreisig as pastor . The farewell in Trier became a demonstration for the socially minded Gommelshausen. From 1868 to 1870 he was pastor in Löf and from 1870 to 1892 in Plaidt .

From 1852 to 1853 and then again from 1867 to 1871 Gommelshausen was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives , in which he was a co-founder of the Catholic parliamentary group . From 1867 to 1871 he was a member of the Reichstag of the North German Confederation for the constituency of Koblenz 5 ( Mayen , Ahrweiler ). In the Reichstag he belonged to the faction of the Free Association . In this capacity he was also a member of the Customs Parliament from 1868 to 1870 .
