Kasimir Kantak

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kasimir Kantak (born March 22, 1824 in Posen , † December 28, 1886 in Posen) stood up as a Prussian politician for Polish independence.

Kantak was sentenced to prison in 1845 for conspiratorial activity, but was acquitted in 1847. During the Revolution of 1848 he was a member of the Polish Academic Legion and participated in the Polish uprising. For that Kantak was to imprisonment convicted.

After his release he bought the Dobieszewko manor . He was a member of various scientific societies. He was also the chairman of various cooperatives and from 1861 secretary of the Central Union of Polish Landowners.

From 1862 to 1886 Kantak was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives . He belonged to the Polish parliamentary group . Between 1867 and 1871 he was also a member of the North German Reichstag for the constituency of Bromberg 4.

Among other things, he criticized the government's actions against the Polish uprising of 1863 and called for the recognition of Polish national rights. He rejected the annexation of Schleswig-Holstein. Kantak protested in vain against the integration of the areas that formerly belonged to Poland into the German nation-state from 1867. Personally more liberal, he pleaded for an alliance between the Poles and the Center Party in order to achieve his political goals. In 1883, Kantak and other Polish MPs approached the Prussian government in vain with an interpellation to allow the Polish language to be used in school lessons in Posen.
