Anton Franz Johann Russell (born September 23, 1824 in Haselünne ; † March 4, 1878 in Oldenburg ) was a lawyer and member of the Reichstag .

Professional career

Russell was the son of the businessman Gustav Russell (1799–1877) and his wife Wilhelmina born. Keyl (1799–1843) born. First he received private lessons in his parents' house and then attended the Carolinum grammar school in Osnabrück from 1839 to 1844 and studied law at the universities of Heidelberg and Göttingen from 1844 to 1847 . In 1858 he came to Damme as a magistrate and in 1865 received the title of Counselor . In 1877 he finally became a member of the Oldenburg Higher Appeal Court , to which he belonged until his death shortly thereafter.

Political activity

Russell was a member of the Oldenburg state parliament from 1860 to 1876 . As representatives of the South Oldenburg region Catholics he spoke in 1866 of large German conviction against the alliance with the Kingdom of Prussia and against the German war with Austria from. However, out of fear of a Prussian occupation of the country and out of realpolitical insight, he finally voted for the alliance treaty and in 1867 - despite serious reservations - also accepted the draft constitution for the North German Confederation . From 1867 Russell was a member of the Reichstag of the North German Confederation , in which he joined the federal constitutional association . In 1871 he was a member of the 30-strong Imperial Deputation in Parliament for the Imperial Proclamation in Versailles .

From 1871 to 1874 Russell represented the constituency of Oldenburg 3 (Berne-Damme) for the center in the German Reichstag . In January 1874 he had to resign from the Reichstag for health and professional reasons, and two years later he also resigned from the Landtag.

Since January 13, 1852 Russell was with Henriette, born in Osnabrück. Pielsticker (October 13, 1826 - November 27, 1878) married. The couple had four children. Russell was the uncle of Emil Russell .
