Alexander Ewald von Below (born February 18, 1801 at Gut Noistfer near Reval , Estonia ; † September 3, 1882 at Gut Hohendorf near Reichenbach in East Prussia ) was a landowner , member of the Reichstag and member of the Prussian mansion .

family

Alexander von Below was a member of the Baltic branch of the noble family von Below and son of Andreas von Below (* 1763, † 1820), land marshal in Livonia and lord of Perst in Livonia and Anna Dorothea Helene von Helffreich (* 1776, † 1821) . Karl Friedrich von Below was his older brother.

Life

Below attended high school in Reval and then studied philosophy and natural sciences in Dorpat from 1818 to 1821 . In 1822 he took over the management of the Reddentin family's estate in Pomerania. With skill and a lucky hand, he brought the wealth of his cousin Gustav von Below to a considerable height. After he died in 1843, he took over the Hohendorf estate on Lake Drausensee .

The period of upheaval of 1848 made Below become politically active. He colluded with Otto von Bismarck, who was not yet tied to a state position, and a friendship developed between the two. Below became a member of the first Prussian chamber in 1851, and in 1855 a member of the Prussian manor house for life. He joined the conservative faction. In 1867 he was elected to the Reichstag of the North German Confederation for the constituency of Königsberg 7, to which he belonged until 1869. There he especially fought against the introduction of universal equal suffrage. Since 1868 he was also a member of the customs parliament . He was elected in the Reichstag constituency of Königsberg 7 district. He resigned his mandate on December 10, 1868.
