Karl Friedrich von Below (born June 3, 1794 in Meyris ; † July 15, 1867 ) was Vice Governor in the Estonian governorate .

family

Karl von Below was a member of the Baltic noble family von Below and son of Andreas von Below (* 1763; † 1820), land marshal in Livonia and heir to Perst in Livonia and Anna Dorothea Helene von Helffreich (* 1776; † 1821). Alexander von Below was his younger brother.

Below married in 1822 in Riesenberg with Freiin Eva Wilhelmina von Stackelberg (* 1800; † 1882). The marriage resulted in four sons.

Career

Below attended high school at St. Petri in St. Petersburg . In 1809 he became a column leader in the quartermaster's system in Suite SM He then embarked on a career with the cavalry and in 1811 became a standard junker in the Guard Cuirassier Regiment, then a cornet in the Astrakhan Cuirassier Regiment, advanced to lieutenant in 1813 and he held the Vladimir- 4th class medal for his service at Kulm . He then served in the Guard Uhlan Regiment and was again honored for bravery. In 1814 he took part in the invasion of Paris and received the Order of Anne, 2nd class, for his service at Fère-Champenoise . In 1818 he was promoted to staff riding master, in 1819 to Rittmeister at the same time switched to the regiment of hunters on horseback and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He took his preliminary farewell in 1821 with the rank of colonel. In 1827 he resumed his active service as a lieutenant colonel in the gendarme corps and in 1829 switched to the army , more precisely to the Astrakhan cuirassier regiment. In 1830 he was counted in the Guards Cavalry Regiment, and in 1831 he was promoted to colonel and commander of the "Prince Alexander von Württemberg" dragoon regiment in Poland . Since 1834 Below served as a councilor in community service and was initially a civil servant on a special assignment at the Ministry of Finance. From 1836 to 1839 he was head of the Grodno customs district . In the years 1839 to 1841 Below was again in the Ministry of Finance. From 1841 to 1852 he was the lieutenant governor of Estonia and at the same time chief, from 1852 also president of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce . In 1843 he was promoted to the Real Council of State and in 1852 received the Order of Vladimir 3rd class. Below was the hereditary lord of the Estonian estates Echnes and Maals, in 1824 he received the Estonian indigenous property , which corresponded to the admission into the Estonian knighthood .
