The Druzno (also Drużno , German Drausensee ) is a lake in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship .

Geographical location

The lake is located about 30 kilometers south of the Gdańsk Bay near the Baltic Sea coast , 20 kilometers south of the Frischer Haff , five kilometers south of the town of Elbląg (Elbing) and 15 kilometers west of the town of Pasłęk (Prussian Holland) .

History and nature

The name of the lake, which used to be called Lake Drausen , goes back to the Baltic tribe of the Pruzzen , who called it Drussino or Drußno .

The Druzno is 9.7 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide. It is the remnant of a large lake basin that in earlier times extended to Prussian Holland. The lake is relatively shallow with an average depth of three meters. Its expansion was significantly greater in earlier centuries, but land has been reclaimed from the lake over time. Towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when the lake was on the border of West and East Prussia , its extension was given as ten kilometers long and four kilometers wide.

Shipping lines and canoe trails run through the lake, some of which are marked with sea marks due to the heavy vegetation of the water . Among them is the line of Elbląg (Elbing) through the canal for up to Małdyty (Maldeuten) . Its main tributary is the Dzierzgoń (Sorge) , its outflow is the Elbląg (Elbing) .

The trading place Truso was on the banks of the Drausensee when it was still part of the Fresh Lagoon .
