Karl Bernhardi

Karl Christian Sigismund Bernhardi (born October 5, 1799 in Ottrau , Hesse , † August 1, 1874 in Kassel ) was a German writer , librarian , publicist and politician .

Life

As the son of the preacher Johann Christian Bernhardi (born April 8, 1767 in Bacharach ; † July 11, 1837 in Zierenberg ) and his wife Sabine, née Claudi (born September 11, 1769 in Wetter near Marburg ; † July 13, 1836 in Zierenberg) , Karl Bernhardi studied Protestant theology and philology at Philipps University . In 1816 he became active in the Corps Hassia Marburg . In 1817 he joined the old Marburg fraternity Germania . From 1819 to 1823 he was a tutor in Brussels , then continued his studies of philology at the State University of Leuven continued where it 1826 Dr. phil. PhD and librarian . In 1829 he was appointed the first librarian at the Kurhessische Bibliothek .

The Hessian constitution of 1831 found in him one of its most active champions. In 1831 he was co-founder and editor of the newspaper “ Der Verfassungsfreund ” and in 1833 belonged to the Electoral Hessian Estates Assembly . In 1834 he founded the “Institute for the Education of Poor and Neglected Boys” in Kassel. He was a member of the city council of Kassel and head of the citizens' committee from 1835 to 1841.

From May 18, 1848 to May 21, 1849 he was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly for the 2nd electoral district of Eschwege in Hesse . He belonged to Heinrich von Gagern's casino faction and issued the leaflets from the National Assembly from June to October 1848 . After the dissolution of the National Assembly, he took part in the Gotha post-parliament .

From 1859 to 1874 he was the director of the Kurhessische Landesbibliothek as one of the successors of Jacob Grimm . In the same year he became a board member of the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies , which he had co-founded in 1834 and of which he was a board member until his death.

As a member of the National Liberal Party , he sat in the Prussian House of Representatives from 1867 to October 1868 and in the Reichstag (North German Confederation) from 1867 to 1870 .

Karl Bernhardi was since 1838 with Ida Engelhard (born October 3, 1811 in Kassel; † October 1, 1866 ibid), daughter of Kassel High Court Director Wilhelm Gotthelf Engelhard and his first wife Karoline Heym (1795-1821), married. Both son was the Reich judge Heinrich Bernhardi .
