The Constitutional Friend was a liberal newspaper that appeared in Kassel between 1831 and 1834 .

history

The "Verfassungsfreund" was founded by the liberal Kassel lawyer Friedrich Hahn under the title "Hessische Blätter für Stadt und Land" and in March 1831 it was renamed "Der Verfassungsfreund". The editor was the Kassel printer Dietrich Albrecht Geeh (1800–1871) and the editor from March 1831 to the beginning of 1832 was the journalist Christian Feldmann . At first the newspaper appeared weekly, then three times a week. That is why it initially had the subtitle "Wochenschrift für Staats- und Volksleben", which was then changed to "Zeitschrift". An edition of “Verfassungsfreund” usually comprised eight to 16 pages. In between there were always supplements and supplements.

Leading liberal journalists and politicians from Kassel, including Karl Bernhardi , Karl Pfeiffer and Ludwig Schwarzenberg , published in “Verfassungsfreund” . The articles almost always appeared anonymously with a number seal . The political orientation of the paper alternated between moderate and decidedly liberal . From the beginning the newspaper suffered greatly from the censorship in Kurhessen ; individual articles were deleted and entire editions were banned. In Kassel, in addition to the “Verfassungsfreund”, only the state-affiliated “ Kasselsche Allgemeine Zeitung ” appeared. Because of the arrest of his editor Geeh ordered by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior under the direction of Ludwig Hassenpflug , the “Verfassungsfreund” ceased publication in October 1834.

An (incomplete) microfilm edition of “Verfassungsfreund” is available in the Hessian university libraries. In addition, there are individual copies in the newspaper inventory of the Hessian State Archives in Marburg .
