Ludwig Schwarzenberg

Johannes Daniel Wilhelm Ludwig Schwarzenberg (born November 27, 1787 in Kassel ; † October 26, 1857 there ) was a German lawyer and politician . He was several times President of the Hessian Estates Assembly and a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly .

Life

His father was a pastor. He himself studied law in Marburg and Göttingen . Then in 1807 he worked as a government procurator in the service of the provisional French occupation administration in Kassel. After the formation of the Kingdom of Westphalia , he was an advocate at the State Council of the Kingdom until 1809. Then he went over to the camp of Napoleon's opponents . He took part in the Dörnberg revolt in 1809 and then fled to Bohemia . In the same year he joined the Freikorps of the Duke of Braunschweig-Oels as a volunteer . With this he fought in the rank of lieutenant on the English side in 1812, including in the battle of Salamanca . A year later he was involved in the siege of San Sebastian . There he was seriously wounded and was taken prisoner by the French. After his release he resigned from military service in 1814, partially paralyzed, with the rank of captain.

Schwarzenberg was a lawyer and procurator in Kassel until 1835. He then worked there until 1857 as a senior court attorney. He worked for the liberal newspaper “ Der Verfassungsfreund ”, which appeared between 1831 and 1834.

As a liberal politician, Schwarzenberg had been a member of the Hessian Estates Assembly since 1833. Here he and Karl Wilhelm Wippermann were among the determined liberals by advocating a press law, among other things. Schwarzenberg was actively involved in numerous committees of the state parliament. He maintained his mandate until 1850. In 1838 and from 1848 to 1850 he was President of Parliament and in 1839, 1845 and 1848 Vice-President. In 1850 he was chairman of the permanent estates committee.

Schwarzenberg was also politically active beyond Kurhessen. He took part in the pre-parliament in 1848 and was a member of the Fifties Committee . Between May 18, 1848 and October 23, 1848 he represented the electoral district Kurhessen 1 (Kassel) in the Frankfurt National Assembly . He belonged to the Westendhall parliamentary group . Schwarzenbach was a member of the Rules Committee.

Because of his involvement in the constitutional conflict in the state of Hesse , Schwarzenberg was sentenced to imprisonment for a fortress .

In 1856 he was made honorary citizenship of Kassel.

His son Philipp Schwarzenberg was also a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly.
