Since the early 1990s, Arend has dealt intensively with the complex issues of demographic change and a society of long life. His concepts and projects repeatedly receive a lot of attention and attention. He is one of the pioneers of fully inpatient house communities in Germany and in 2005 published the first standard work on this new form of living and care for people in need of care. He developed and implemented a multi-generational quarter with outpatient care groups as well as a specialist care center for people with traumatic brain injuries and people in a vegetative state. He is currently working on the further development of the Wohnstift as a product for living and living in old age. In addition, his attention is directed, among other things, to the complex of topics "Technology and care - support options for carers" and personnel development in care. This is reflected, among other things, in the two publications "Who cares for Germany?" and "Long-Term Care Workplace".

Arend published around 100 articles on new forms of living and care as well as on the marketing of social services. In addition, he has been dealing with the topics of language of care and communication in elderly care for many years .

His medical-historical research was reflected in an edition of an operation report in the Fuldaer Landkrankenhaus in 1835 as well as in biographical treatises on the physician Vinzenz Adelmann (1780-1850).

In 2001, Arend founded the Goldenagers archive , which deals with the public perception of age and aging. The forerunner was a collection of material on paper since the early 1990s.
