KWA Kuratorium Wohnen im Alter non-profit AG is a sponsor of retirement homes in Germany with headquarters in Unterhaching in the district of Munich . KWA operates 16 retirement homes across Germany with a total of 2,748 residents (as of December 31, 2019), a clinic for neurological and geriatric rehabilitation and an academy with training centers for social professions. It organizes specialist symposia on senior and care issues. The KWA Symposium 2020 dealt with the topic of “Kassensturz in nursing”.

The company is managed by the board members Stefan Arend and Horst Schmieder under the supervisory board chairman Manfred Matusza and the deputy supervisory board chairman Ekkehart Meroth. KWA is a member of the " BAGSO - Federal Working Group of Senior Citizens' Organizations eV " and a member of the " Federal Association of Private Providers of Social Services eV " (bpa).

The association Münchner Altenwohnstift e. V. was founded in Munich on October 10, 1966: with the aim of creating living space for older people and thus giving them an adequate home.

The first decade

  • Willi Guthsmuths becomes chairman, Hermann Beckmann managing director of the newly founded association Münchner Altenwohnstift e. V. (MAW).
  • On October 1, 1969, the first residential monastery opened in the Neuperlach district of Munich: the KWA Georg-Brauchle-Haus.
  • In 1970, the then Mayor of Munich, Hans-Jochen Vogel, awarded the MAW the City of Munich's Honorary Prize for good housing construction.
  • On October 1, 1973, the first residential monastery opened in Baden-Württemberg, in Constance: the KWA Parkstift Rosenau.
  • With the founding of the "Kuratorium Wohnen im Alter" (Kuratorium Wohnen im Alter) in 1977, the regional sponsoring associations get a joint umbrella association, chaired by Wilhelm Faltlhauser.

From 1980 to 1999

  • On April 1, 1980, the company opens a geriatric care school in Bad Griesbach, which, under the direction of Karl-Heinz Edelmann, has been further developed with further technical and vocational schools, a specialist academy for social pedagogy as well as further education and training opportunities to form the KWA education center - since 2012 at the new location Parish churches.
  • In 1992 KWA opened a clinic for neurological and geriatric rehabilitation in Bad Griesbach: KWA Klinik Stift Rottal . Head physician Christoph Garner establishes a holistic approach. In addition to classic treatment methods and device-supported, modern physiotherapy, alternative therapies are also used.   • In 1995 the first KWA residential building was opened in North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • On April 1, 1996, MAW and the regional sponsoring associations merged to form the new association KWA Kuratorium Wohnen im Alter e. V.
  • In 1999, KWA Betriebs- und Service GmbH (KBS) was founded as a subsidiary of KWA. Today the KWA kitchen operations as well as gastronomy, housekeeping, IT, KWA Reisen and KWA Club are located there, under the management of Horst Schmieder and Thomas Schurr.

From 2000 to 2019

  • KWA Baumanagement under the management of Gerhard Schaller and Betreutes Wohnen Planungs GmbH with the managing director Walter Eisele go into operation in 2000.
  • In 2002 another federal state was connected to KWA: by opening a residential monastery in Berlin.
  • KWA Assisted Living was realized for the first time in 2003 with "Seniorenwohnen am Bodensee" in Konstanz: The houses are located in the immediate vicinity of the residential community, so that residents can take advantage of the services offered by the residential community and also the outpatient care service from KWA.
  • In 2005 the non-profit association became the KWA Kuratorium Wohnen im Alter gAG. The non-profit status remains. The previous members of the association become shareholders and continue to contribute on a voluntary basis. Instead of a board of directors, there has been a supervisory board since then, which is elected by the shareholders.
  • KWA celebrates its 50th anniversary on October 10, 2016 in the Old Town Hall in Munich . Founding member Hermann Beckmann and his wife Dagmar are guests of honor. The Bavarian Minister of Social Affairs Emilia Müller speaks a greeting.
