Carl Altmüller (born January 1, 1833 in Hersfeld , † September 23, 1880 in Kassel ) was a German librarian, archivist and author.

Life

Altmüller was the son of a clergyman who worked as a pastor in Hersfeld and later as a Metropolitan in Melsungen . He attended the Friedrichsgymnasium in Kassel. He then studied medicine, then law, philosophy and literature in Marburg, Berlin and Munich. In 1857 he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD. In 1859 and 1860 he published the weekly literary magazine Der Telegraph in Kassel . He worked briefly as a businessman in Leipzig before doing his legal preparatory service at the Kassel Higher Court.

Altmüller was a trainee at the Leipzig agency FC Gottlieb, worked as an editor and published from 1861 as a theater critic and cultural journalist in Kassel. After the Prussian annexations he found employment in the civil service and worked from 1866 to 1871 for the Hessian and Prussian State Archives in Kassel (from 1870 Marburg ) as archives secretary. From 1871 to 1880 he was the first librarian and director of the Murhard library in Kassel.

Altmüller also worked as a dramaturge at the Kassel court theater. He also wrote poems, novellas and stories with an autobiographical reference. His Hessian song (“I know an expensive country”) became famous. In 1868 he translated Robinson Crusoe into German.

On the night of September 22nd to 23rd, 1880 Altmüller died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 47 . His grave of honor is in the main cemetery in Kassel .
