Wilhelm Genast

Wilhelm Karl Albert Genast (born July 30, 1822 in Leipzig , † January 18, 1887 in Weimar ) was a German poet lawyer . Before and after the founding of the German Empire , he was a member of the Reichstag .

Life

Genast was the son of the Weimar singer and court actor Eduard Franz Genast . From 1841 to 1845 he studied law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Universität Jena . In Jena he became a member of the Arminia fraternity on the Burgkeller (1842) and the fraternity on the Fürstenkeller (1843). In Heidelberg he also joined the fraternity of Walhalla Heidelberg in 1844 . He settled as a lawyer in Weimar in 1845 , where he became a public prosecutor in 1852 . From 1865 he was a member of the Weimar state parliament and in 1872 became a secret councilor.

In 1867 he was elected to the Reichstag (North German Confederation) for the National Liberal Party , then in 1871 to the Reichstag (German Empire) for constituency 3 Weimar , in which he was a member of the National Liberal parliamentary group . Here he stood out in particular as an opponent of the death penalty . In 1872 he became a lecturer in the Weimar Ministry and in 1873 also president of the regional synod. Because of his promotion in 1872 he had to resign from the Reichstag, but was re-elected in the replacement election. He was a member of the Reichstag until 1874.

As a poet, he wrote historical tragedies, festivals and novels.
