Arnold Wendel (born July 2, 1817 in Butzbach ; † December 11, 1868 there ) was a Hessian baker, mill owner and a politician.

Life

Arnold Wendel attended school in Butzbach. He was a student of Friedrich Ludwig Weidig , one of the protagonists of the Vormärz and pioneer of the revolution of 1848. He completed an apprenticeship as a baker in his father's business. In 1834/35 Wendel read to farmers in the neighboring villages of Butzbach who could not read from Georg Büchner and Weidig's revolutionary pamphlet " Der Hessische Landbote ". In 1837/1838 a criminal investigation was initiated against him because of the spread of the Hessischer Landbotens. After his apprenticeship, he worked as a baker in London for two years. From 1843 to 1845 he sailed around the world and visited the emigrated and exiled Weidig students in North America and Australia . In 1846 he undertook a major trip to the Orient. He recorded his travel impressions in detailed descriptions, some of which were published in the Frankfurter Journal . In 1848 he took part in the revolutionary events. He was supposed to become second chairman of the Upper Hessian Democratic Congress, at which he represented Butzbach, but refused to chair him. From 1849 he was the owner of the Scheidemühle near Grossen-Buseck .

From 1867 until his death he was a member of the Reichstag of the North German Confederation for the constituency of Hesse 2 ( Friedberg , Büdingen , Vilbel ). In this capacity he was also a member of the Customs Parliament . He remained non-attached in the Reichstag and was described as wildly liberal . In his election, he had no opponents. The turnout was below 10%.
