Georg von Bunsen

Georg von Bunsen (born November 7, 1824 in Rome , † December 22, 1896 in London ) was a Prussian and German liberal politician.

Life

He was the son of the diplomat Christian Karl Josias von Bunsen and was initially brought up by private tutors in Rome, where his father was ambassador. He later attended the Schulpforta high school . He then studied philology, history and geography in Berlin and Bonn . He received his doctorate as Dr. phil. An eye disease prevented him from taking over an academic teaching post. Bunsen traveled a lot, including Italy and France. He dedicated himself to his estate near Bonn. In addition, Bunsen published some political and economic essays. He married Emma von Birkbeck. One daughter was Marie von Bunsen .

Bunsen was liberal and initially belonged to the National Liberal Party . In the 1880s he was a member of the Liberal Association and finally the German Freedom Party .

Between 1862 and 1879 Bunsen was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives . He represented the Rhine constituency Rheinbach - Bonn and from 1867 to 1879 the constituencies Düsseldorf 1 (Lennep - Solingen) and Düsseldorf 3 (Mettmann). In parliament he was a member of the budget commission and some special commissions. He was also vice-president of the teaching committee. At first he belonged to the faction of the Left Center, from the IX. In parliamentary term he joined the National Liberal Group. Between 1867 and 1870 he represented the constituency of Solingen in the Reichstag of the North German Confederation . From 1871 to 1874 he also represented the constituency in the Reichstag of the German Empire . On May 23, 1876, he was re-elected to the Reichstag in a replacement election in the constituency of Liegnitz 8 (Schönau - Hirschberg). At first he belonged to the national liberal faction, but in 1880 he joined the Liberal Association, as its representative he was able to win the constituency again in 1881. After he had meanwhile switched to the German Freedom Party, he won the constituency again in 1883. On September 7, 1885, he resigned from the mandate.

In addition, he was active in numerous associations and clubs. From 1876 he was secretary of the German African Society.

He spent his last years in London. His daughter Marie von Bunsen published a biography: "Georg von Bunsen, a character picture from the camp of the vanquished." (Berlin, 1900).
