Mendel Heymann

Mendel Heymann (originated from: Menachem Chaim ; also Mendel or Mendl Dessau ; * 1683 ; † May 10, 1766 in Dessau ) was Sofer , community clerk and primary school teacher in Dessau. Coming from a very humble background, he was the father of Moses Mendelssohn (who was then called "Mendelssohn", or "son of Mendel"), the progenitor of the famous Mendelssohn family .

Little is known about his life. Due to his poverty, he was unable to provide the ailing Moses with an expensive education, but initially led the first Hebrew lessons for the toddler himself before he left Moses - at the age of three - to the lessons of the Dessau chief rabbi David Hirschel Fraenkel , who took him into the introduced a deeper study of the Bible , Talmud and the most important commentaries, later also of Maimonides, etc.
