From 1831 to 1848 he was a representative of the manor owners of Upper Lusatia and a member of the Second Chamber of the Saxon State Parliament . He was several times a speaker or board member of the finance deputation. At the Landtag, which met in 1847, he held the office of Deputy President of the Chamber.

In the Allgemeine Realencyclopädie the following characterization can be found: “ He is characterized by eloquence, dialectical and parliamentary fluency and independence of mind. He is neither a systematic opposition man, nor a ministerial man, and one finds him now on this side, now on that side, but always following his convictions, and sometimes following his mood. His fault is vehemence and irritability, and because of this lack of calm and patience his effectiveness as Vice-President of the Second Chamber at the extraordinary Diet of 1847 failed. "

In 1867 von Thielau was a member of the constituent Reichstag of the North German Confederation for the constituency of Saxony 2 ( Löbau ) and the Free Conservative Association .
