Robert Miles Sloman (the younger)
Robert Miles Sloman - usually called the younger to distinguish himself from his father of the same name - (* July 30, 1812 in Itzehoe ; † October 30, 1900 in Othmarschen ) was a shipowner and member of the Reichstag of the North German Confederation .
Life
Robert Miles Sloman was the son of Robert Miles Sloman (1783-1867). He ran the family's Rob. M. Sloman shipping company , which was founded in Hamburg in 1793 and still exists today. At the age of 16 he started as an apprentice here. In 1838 he married Christine Amalia Roselia von Stephani, with whom he had five daughters. He founded several steam shipping companies with which he operated regular routes in the Mediterranean from 1872, in the Baltic Sea from 1881 and to Australia from 1881. In 1888 he was one of the founders of the "German-Australian Steamship Company". In 1890 he handed over management of the shipping company to his son-in-law.
From 1864 to 1899 he was a member of the Hamburg parliament . In 1867 he was a member of the constituent Reichstag of the North German Confederation for the constituency of Hamburg 3 and the National Liberal Party .
On the Veddel he create the Slomansiedlung, there also the Slomanstraße and Slomanstieg are named after him, the Slomanhaus on Baumwall in Hamburg since 1908/98 headquarters of the shipping company.
In 1895 Sloman received the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Crown of Italy from the King of Italy .
