Javier Vargas Rueda (born November 22, 1941 in Guadalajara , Jalisco ) is a former Mexican football goalkeeper .

Career

With the exception of the 1973/74 season , when he was under contract with Club San Luis , Vargas played exclusively for clubs in his hometown. He began his professional career in 1962 with Atlas Guadalajara , for whom he worked for a total of 12 years, and ended it in 1979 with local rivals Jalisco , where he was under contract for the last four years of his active football career .

Between 1966 and 1969, Vargas guarded the goal of the Mexican national team eleven times . He was the third goalkeeper in the Mexican World Cup squad in 1966 , but had no chance of appearances behind Mexico's goalkeeper legend Antonio Carbajal and Ignacio Calderón from city ​​rivals Chivas .
