Theodorus Rijcke

Theodorus Rijcke also: Rijccius Ryckius Rycken ; (* February 12, 1640 in Arnhem ; † January 7, 1690 in Leiden ) was a Dutch historian and rhetorician.

Life

Nothing is known about Rijcke's parentage and first career. On September 6, 1660 he enrolled at the University of Leiden , where he began to study literature and philosophy. He soon got a job as principal of the Latin school in Kampen . He left this and completed an educational trip for four years in 1657 which took him to England, France and Italy. When he returned to his home in the Netherlands, he settled in The Hague as a lawyer in 1671 . His skills in the Greek and Latin languages ​​earned him on April 13, 1672 a reputation as a professor of history and rhetoric. In Leiden he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1682/83 .
