Edward Hammond Hargraves (born October 7, 1816 in Gosport , England , † October 29, 1891 in Sydney , Australia ) was a British explorer and found gold fields in Australia.

Hargraves tried unsuccessfully to make his fortune as a gold digger during the California gold rush . So he went to Australia, where the similarity of the soil conditions of the gold fields there with the areas in California known to him prompted further investigations. This led to the discovery of the gold veins on the Macquarie River ( 1851 ). He was then appointed by the government as Commissioner of Crown lands and tasked with investigating the metal-bearing parts of the country. After reporting his research, he retired into private life in 1852 , received a government award of £ 10,000 and settled in England in 1864 . He died in Sydney in October 1891.
