Albert Freiherr von Schrenck-Notzing (born May 18, 1862 in Osternburg , now Oldenburg ; † February 12, 1929 in Munich ) was a German physician and a pioneer of psychotherapy and parapsychology .

Albert von Schrenck-Notzing came from the old Munich patrician family of the Schrenck von Notzing . He was the son of Rittmeister Franz von Schrenck-Notzing (1824-1905) and his wife Meta Abbes (1842-1904). His brother Hermann (1863–1926) was a lieutenant colonel, his uncle Wilhelm von Schrenck-Notzing (1828–1892) was the mayor of Oldenburg.

He studied medicine in Munich and received his doctorate in 1888. The following year he established himself as a general practitioner in Munich. He devoted himself to medical psychology and was the first psychotherapist in southern Germany.

Schrenck-Notzing became known among other things through his experiments with hypnosis . In 1886, together with the philosopher Carl du Prel , he founded the Psychological Society in Munich , which dealt with topics that are now predominantly assigned to parapsychology. Are known as Thomas Mann reports on experiments with the medium Willi Schneider , which took place in the early twenties. Schrenck-Notzing was particularly interested in the therapeutic potential of hypnosis. As a psychotherapist, he developed new methods for treating sexual dysfunction and neurasthenia .

Schrenck-Notzing married Gabriele Siegle (1872–1953) in 1892 , a daughter of the industrialist Gustav von Siegle . With her he had two sons:
