Live and act

Aly was a descendant of the Chamberlain Friedrich Aly († 1716). His parents were the businessman Eduard Aly and his wife Anna geb. Punched. His younger brother Eduard (1854–1901) later became a lawyer and poet, his son Wolfgang Aly a classical philologist. Gottfried Friedrich Aly attended the Domgymnasium Magdeburg and studied classical philology at the universities of Bonn , Leipzig and Berlin . In 1873 he received his doctorate in Leipzig under Georg Curtius . He then worked as a teacher a. a. in Hagenau and was appointed director of the Burg Gymnasium (near Magdeburg) in 1895 . In 1900 he moved to the Philippinum Marburg . Here he died as the director of the grammar school in 1913 at the age of 60.

Aly's scientific work was less significant. Larger scope were his works The sources of Pliny in the eighth book of natural history (Marburg 1882; also on the source criticism of the elder Pliny , 1885), Cicero. His life and writings (Berlin 1891), Horace, his life and works (Gütersloh 1893) and the history of Roman literature (Berlin 1894). He also published a multiple edition of selected letters from Cicero.

Aly's life achievement is his concern for school politics. He had a major influence on the reorganization of Prussian high school teaching and also turned against the historicism advocated by Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff . Aly advocated an increase in the high school teaching staff, for their scientific further education and material equality with the judges. From 1909, Aly was the successor to Oskar Jäger as chairman of the high school club .

Aly was inducted into Freemasonry on November 12, 1880 . He was u. a. Honorary master of the Lodge Adamay to the holy castle in Burg near Magdeburg and honorary member of the Great National Mother Lodge to the three globes as well as the lodges in Magdeburg and Halberstadt. In Marburg he was a “constantly visiting” brother at the Marc Aurel lodge for the flaming star without becoming a member.

The historian Götz Aly is a great-grandson .
