Jakob Ammann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jakob Ammann (* February 12, 1644 (?) In Erlenbach in the Simmental ; † before 1730 probably near Zellwiller , Alsace ) was originally a preacher for the Swiss brothers who became the founding father of the Amish , who are named after him. Little is known about his life.

Around 1655 he moved with his parents to Oberhofen am Thunersee , before 1680 he converted to Anabaptism and later became the elder of an Anabaptist community. Soon after 1680 he had to flee to Alsace, lived in Heidolsheim from 1693 to 1695 , in Markirch from 1695 to 1712 and then probably in Zellweiler until his death . He was probably a tailor , like his father.

In the summer of 1693 he traveled to a number of parishes in the Swiss Emmental who were willing to baptize . The Amish or Amish Mennonites are derived from him after he caused a split in the Mennonites in 1694 through his harsh attitude towards church discipline.
