Gottfried Pohlan

Gottfried Pohlan (born February 12, 1927 in Höckendorf ; † November 30, 1989 in Suhl ) was a German motorcycle racer .

He was GDR champion both in motorcycle street racing and in motorcycle off-road racing. At the International Six Day Trip in 1964 , he won the International Silver Vase with the GDR Quartet.

Athletic career

Gottfried Pohlan learned the trade of a car mechanic in Dresden and got into racing in 1947. He started out on the road with a 350 BMW and soon acquired the license. In 1950 he came to the AWO plant in Eisenach , where he drove a pre-war BMW 500 series. In 1953 he became motorcycle road champion in the GDR .

In the same year began for him with the manufactured in Eisenach 350er- EMW the motorcycle off-road racing . He and his friends Kurt Rüdiger and Werner Hollack became GDR team champions straight away. At the beginning of 1955 he switched to the Suhler AWO terrain force. Together with Helmut Amthor and Alfred Schütz, Pohlan won the team title and was also GDR individual champion in the class up to 250 cm³. He first appeared in the International Six Day Trips in 1956 . In the 32nd International Six Day Race in 1957, he won a bronze medal. In 1959 he was a member of the GDR Trophy team, which took third place. In 1960 he returned from the international six-day race with a gold medal from Austria .

He switched from the large four-stroke to the small, two- stroke Simson up to 50 and 75 cm³ in 1962. At the Six Days 1964 he won the battle for the international silver vase together with Siegfried Rauhut , Ewald Schneidewind and Lothar Schünemann . As a works driver, according to the regulations, he could not be considered in the GDR championship. After the end of his career, he passed on his extensive experience to the next generation of motorcycle offroaders for many years.
