Life

The son of a paper manufacturer graduated from the humanistic grammar school of the Benedictine monastery in Metten in 1873, studied at the arts and crafts school in Munich from 1873 to 1875 and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1878 . In 1878 he passed the teaching examination for teaching drawing and modeling at the TH Munich . Between 1879 and 1900 he was a teacher at various schools in Munich, with frequent interruptions due to study trips.

From 1900 he was freelance and lived on public and private assignments. Kandler was the creator of monumental wall painting cycles, which, however, mostly did not survive due to the demolition or destruction of the buildings (e.g. in the town hall in Essen ) and paintings for the decoration of churches in Odelzhausen , in his hometown (Geiersbergkirche) and in Sibiu . The portraits and genre images that have been preserved are painted using different painting techniques and styles. He is thus a typical representative of the Munich school .
