Darwin day
The Darwin Day is a worldwide celebrated Memorial Day , which every year on February 12 , the birthday of Charles Darwin , is celebrated.
Darwin Day is an homage to Darwin's contribution to science . It should also bring the natural sciences closer to the general public ( promote public education about science ) and celebrate the natural sciences and humanity.
The first Darwin Day was celebrated on April 22, 1995 at Stanford University when Donald Johanson , the discoverer of Lucy , gave a lecture on Darwin and the origin of man. In the following years, the event was held on or around February 12, and other universities followed suit with similar events.
Darwin Day is mainly celebrated at universities and by atheists (as a counter-movement to creationism ). The individual events are organized independently and can be listed on the Darwin Day Celebration website. In 2007 there were 850 Darwin Day events.
