Sophie Zelmani (* 12. February 1972 in Stockholm as Sophie Edkvist ) is a Swedish singer and musician . She is the mother of the Swedish artist and songwriter Etta Zelmani .

life and career

Sophie Zelmani grew up in a suburb of Stockholm. After the death of her father, she began writing her own music at the age of 14. Zelmani's stepfather later taught her to play the guitar. During her work as an intern in a recording studio, she got the opportunity to record her own demo tapes. When she sent these demo tapes to labels at the age of 20 , Sony Music was the first to respond and she was given a record deal. She changed her surname and took on the original Russian surname of her grandfather, but dropped an "l" in the name. Her 1995 debut album, Sophie Zelmani , together with her single Always You , was a success in Sweden, and later throughout Europe and Japan . With her second album Precious Burden she was also successful in the USA .

Zelmani now lives on a Swedish island. She is married and the couple have a daughter.

Music style and influences

Zellmani has worked with the guitarist and producer Lars Halapi since the start of her career and often records her songs in his own recording studio in the Österlen region in Skåne. She writes in English because she finds it harder to express herself accurately in Swedish.

Sophie Zelmani's music builds on her quiet and reserved voice in combination with an acoustic guitar . She was influenced u. a. by Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen . A cover version of Bob Dylan's Most of the Time is on her album Masked and Anonymous .

Others

Zelmani is media-shy and known for her stage fright . She prefers to express herself primarily through her music and not to talk more than necessary.
