Musical description
The music is mainly acoustically instrumented. The “romantic folk” offers plenty of space for Zelmani's voice to “sing about longing, regret and bittersweet love”. According to the dpa , Zelmani interprets "sometimes more whispering than singing twelve atmospheric songs that sound reduced and crystal clear and yet profound and touching". The media service teleschau says that the piano “does not make your melancholic acoustic pop too entertaining”. soundmag.de describes the album as "musical escapism", beneath whose textual surface "everyday interactions" were seething. Role models such as Bob Dylan , Van Morrison , Leonard Cohen and Neil Young are named as musical references .
Emergence
Zelmani and her producer Lasse Halapi specifically changed the way they work for The Ocean And Me . Instead of recording the individual songs one after the other, they worked on a different piece every day in a predetermined order. As a result, the songs influenced each other. After completing the recordings, the individual titles were selected using a holistic selection process that is not described in detail.

Reviews
cdkritik.de praises the album for setting “standards for the songwriter genre” by extending “the moment of happiness to album length”. cdstarts.de says that the album was successful "in the usual pleasant way" and awards 7/10 points. teleschau praises the “delicate, almost invisible music” and awards 4/5 points. soundmag.de awards 7/10 points and states that the album "floats completely in its own euphony". musicheadquarter.de awards 9/10 points and compares the music on the album with watching "waves [...] as they gently lap on the beach". This makes it "predictable, calming and never boring, just beautiful".
There was, however, also negative criticism: nordische-musik.de complains that Zelmani's delicately whispered pieces “are deteriorating more and more compositionally”, and fears that “Sophie Zelmani has lost its paint”. Plattentests.de describes the album as "too cute, too mild, negligible" and awards 4/10 points.
