Paul Johannes Schlesinger

Paul Johannes Schlesinger (born July 9, 1874 in Vienna , † February 12, 1945 in the Groß-Rosen concentration camp ) was an Austrian politician .

Life

Paul Johannes Schlesinger grew up in Vienna, attended elementary and community school and then completed an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic . On his journey as a journeyman, Schlesinger traveled all over Europe and worked in Hungary , Germany , the Netherlands , Belgium and Switzerland . In 1905 Schlesinger settled back in his native Vienna, where he was elected secretary of the Austrian Metalworkers' Association.

Schlesinger, who became a member of the Social Democratic Party (SdP), quickly advanced to become a trade unionist who was the district ombudsman for the metal workers in the Mödling , Baden and Wiener Neustadt districts from 1911 to 1912 . In 1907 he also became chairman of the Baden regional health insurance fund.

In 1921 Schlesinger was elected as a member of the SdP in the Lower Austrian state parliament, where he held a mandate for almost five years. In 1926 he moved to the National Council , where he was represented until 1934, with the exception of a two-month break.

In 1934 he was arrested by the Austrofascists and taken to the Wöllersdorf detention center . After a few months he was released. From 1938 to 1939 he was in Gestapo custody and was released. In September 1944, Schlesinger was arrested again and taken to Auschwitz . From there he was transferred to the Groß-Rosen concentration camp, where he was murdered shortly before the end of the war.

Honors

In 1988, to the right of the main entrance to the parliament building in Vienna, a memorial plaque was placed on which the names of all 12 members of the National Council who fell victim to the Nazi terror - among them Paul Johannes Schlesinger.
