Tite Curet Alonso

Tite Curet Alonso (aka Catalino Curet Alonso ; born February 12, 1926 in Guayama ; † August 5, 2003 in Baltimore ) was a Puerto Rican salsa composer .

The son of a seamstress and a Spanish professor, who was a musician in the Simón Madera orchestra , grew up with his grandmother in San Juan after his parents divorced . He studied music theory at the University of Puerto Rico with Jorge Rubián . He composed his first song in New York in 1965 for Joe Quijano .

He became known with the title El grand tirano , which he originally wrote for Roberto Ledesma , but then arranged for the Cuban singer La Lupe . This then had further successes with his compositions Carcajada final and Puro teatro . Then artists like the Trios Los Andinos and Los Condes added his works to their repertoire and Tito Rodríguez made Tiemblas and Don Fulano known.

His joint production with Jerry Massucci on the occasion of Cheo Feliciano's return as a singer produced hits such as Anacaona , Mi triste problema , Pa 'que afinquen , Si por mi llueve and Franqueza cruel . Willie Colón had success with Piraña in 1971 . A little later, Curet wrote Testigo fui and Vale más un guaguancó for Ray Barretto , Las caras lindas de mi gente negra and De todas maneras rosas for Ismael Rivera , Periódico de ayer for Héctor Lavoe , Plantación adentro for Rubén Blades , La esencia del guaguancó for Pete Rodríguez and El prestamista for Rafael Cortijo .

In addition to salsas, he also composed the ballad Tema de Nilsa for Johnny Olivo , the merengue Yo me dominicaniso for the Hijos de Rey and the folk piece Cucubano for Tony Cearrao . Several of his compositions have also been successful at international festivals, such as Y después del amor (with the Hermanos Castro ) at the Festival de Río , Deja al poeta cantar (with Irma Bruno ) at the festival in Buga (Colombia) and Sal saludando (with Cheo Feliciano) at the Festival de la Salsa in Venezuela.

Curet also wrote Spanish lyrics for international hits such as Limelights ( Cantilejas ) by Charlie Chaplin . Chucho Avellanet had great success with his version of If I were once rich ( Si yo fuera rico ) from Anatevka . His compositions have also been used for soundtracks in films such as Pedro Almodóvar's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather: Part II .

As a music journalist, Curet wrote for magazines such as Variedades , Estrellas , El Mundo , l Reportero , Vea and El Vocero . He wrote the book De la vida misma and had a weekly program on Radio Universidad . In total he composed more than 2000 songs.
