Joe Quijano

Joe Quijano ( José Quijano Esteras ; born September 27, 1935 in Puerta de Piedra ; † April 4, 2019 in San Juan ) was a Puerto Rican percussionist, singer-songwriter and band leader.

Quijano came to New York with his family at the age of seven and grew up there in the Bronx. He began his musical training with María Luisa Lecompte and had piano lessons with Eduvijes Bocanegra . With Eddie Palmieri and Orlando Marín , he founded a band in 1950 called Los Mamboys . It was later expanded and performed under different names ( Banana Kelly's Mambo band , Conjunto Orlando Marín , El Conjunto de Eduardo Palmo , Joe Quijano y Su Conjunto ).

After attending secondary school PS 52 , Quijano went to the High School of Industrial Arts and studied music at Columbia University for three years . In 1957 he made his debut with his own band, the Conjunto Cachana . Between 1961 and 1963 he released three albums on Columbia Records . In New York he founded his own label, Cesta Records , which included recordings by Cesta All Star under Charlie Palmieri with Cheo Feliciano , Louie Ramírez , Willie Rosario , Orlando Marín and others.

In 1976 he founded a large orchestra in New York, with which he performed in the Junior's Dancers . In the 1970s and 1980s he performed with Charlie Palmieri at the Caribe Hilton Hotel's Club Caribe . After a motorcycle accident in 1992, he could only walk with sticks. Nevertheless, in 1996 he made a successful tour of eight cities in Colombia.

In 2010 he produced his musical production Joe Quijano y Augusto Onna, 50 años después, Lo inédito de Tite Curet Alonso with Luis Perico Ortiz , Nick Jimenez and his Orquesta de Joe Quijano . The singers here included Paquito Guzmán , Van Lester , Harry Fraticelli and Quijano himself. In 2015 he announced his retirement from musical life; However, he still appeared in 2018 with the Conjunto Cachana at Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing Series . A planned appearance at the Living Legends of Salsa Concert in March 2019 in Medellín had to be canceled after a fall in his apartment.
