Luca Carlevarijs

Luca Carlevarijs or Carlevaris (born January 20, 1663 in Udine , † February 12, 1730 in Venice ) was an Italian painter and etcher , who was also known as Luca da Ca 'Zenobio or Luca Casanobrio . He is considered the pioneer of vedute painting in Venice and influenced later painters such as Canaletto , Bellotto , Marieschi and Francesco Guardi .
biography
His parents were Anna Jugali († 1666) and Giovanni Leonardo (1614–1669). Little Luca, who was orphaned at an early age, grew up with his older sister Cassandra, with whom he went to Venice in 1679. There he lived all his life in a house owned by the monastery dei Carmini .
In 1699 he married Giovanna, a daughter of the goldsmith Bastian Suchietti; The best man was Pietro Zenobio, a friend and patron of the painter. With Giovanna he had four children, including Marianna (1703-1750), who later became a student of Rosalba Carriera . His wife died in January 1710 at the age of 27.
According to Orlandi (1704), Luca Carlevarijs had no “special teacher” ( positivo maestro ), but learned “here and there” ( or qua or là ). Johann Heintz could have had a certain influence on the young Luca, a German painter who was in the lagoon city around 1678. A trip to Rome is generally assumed to be between 1685 and 1690, but this is not documented. There Carlevarijs could have got to know the works of Bamboccianten like van Laer , Cerquozzi and Codazzi , or the poetic landscapes of Salvator Rosa and Claude Lorrain . It is also assumed that the vedutas of the Dutch painter Gaspar Van Wittel (Vanvitelli), who lived in Rome, had an influence , but he could have met him in Venice in 1694.
In 1703 Carlevarijs published a collection of 104 engravings, Fabriche, e Vedute di Venetia . From 1708 to 1713 he was registered in the " fraglia veneziana dei pittori "
Carlevarijs painted landscapes , seascapes and capricci (fantasy landscapes, often with ruins), and especially vedutas of Venice, on which he also depicted the entrances of foreign ambassadors and other festivals such as regattas or ship parades. In contrast to Vanvitelli, who had a rather clear style of close observation, Carlevarijs' paintings are more painterly. Typical for it are a rather hazy atmosphere and dramatic cloud formations and light effects. His pictures are mostly populated by a large number of relatively precisely portrayed people. Numerous sketches and drawings have been preserved, which testify to the meticulous preparation.
He also painted decorative brochures, especially in the Palazzo Zenobio (hence his nickname Luca da Ca 'Zenobio ), and was occasionally consulted as an expert on architecture. It is sometimes assumed that Carlevarijs was one of Canaletto's teachers , and one can certainly assume a strong influence.
Carlevarijs made his will on May 26th and June 7th, 1727. From 1728 he suffered from progressive paralysis. After his death on February 12, 1730, he found his final resting place in the Chiesa dei Carmini in Venice.
