Pieter Bodding van Laer or Pietro Vuandher (* between 1592 and 1599 in Laaren near Haarlem ; † 1642 there ) was a Dutch painter and engraver . He was in Rome for more than a decade and was known for his genre scenes, animal images, and landscapes around Rome. Il Bamboccio was his nickname .

Life

Laer could possibly have been a student of Esaias van de Velde . After a study trip through France , he went to Italy with his brother Roelant and settled in Rome . It can be assumed that van Laer was already familiar with the diversity of the soldier theme, i.e. the military genre , before he left for Rome in 1625/26 . Van Laer remained true to his origins thematically; but his style soon shows the influence of the new artistic environment. The popularity of his works is based above all on his witty and ironic play with heroic, antiquated imagery.

In Rome he made the acquaintance of the painters Claude Lorrain , Nicolas Poussin and Joachim von Sandrart . On the other hand, Laer also founded the style of the Bambocciade , named after its exterior ("bamboccio" = rag doll). Colleagues like Michelangelo Cerquozzi , Viviano Codazzi or Michiel Sweerts were able to get excited about these sometimes very rough scenes from popular life.

Flagellants

After 16 years in Italy, he returned to Haarlem in 1639. He died there in 1642.

In addition to his oil paintings, which are almost entirely attributed to the Bambocciade style, about 20 etchings are known. In these, the subjects can also be found in rural scenes, but with the focus on animals.
