Marcel Minnaert

Marcel Gilles Jozef Minnaert (born February 12, 1893 in Bruges , † October 26, 1970 in Utrecht ) was a Belgian astronomer. His specialties were astrospectroscopy - he was a pioneer of solar spectrophotometry - and the study of stellar atmospheres.

Minnaert first began studying botany at Ghent University , then turned to studying physics at Leiden University . From 1937 to 1963 he was director of the Sonnenborgh Observatory in Utrecht.

He is known for a book on meteorological optics ( light phenomena in the atmosphere ).

Awards and memberships

The moon crater Minnaert and the asteroid (1670) Minnaert were named after Minnaert .
