Fāng Lìzhī (方 励 之; * February 12, 1936 ; † April 6, 2012 in Tucson , Arizona , USA ) was a Chinese scientist and professor of astrophysics at the Chinese University of Science and Technology in Hefei , Anhui Province .

Life

Fang began studying physics at Peking University at the age of 16 . Here he met his future wife.

He was one of the ideas behind the democracy movement. In 1987 he was expelled from the Chinese Communist Party . After the crackdown on student protests in 1989 and the massacre on Tian'anmen Square (Tiananmen Square) , his teaching license was revoked. After the riots, he and his wife fled to the US embassy, ​​where they stayed for 13 months and eventually went into exile in the United States . There, Fang was again academically active and last taught at the University of Arizona .
