Humfried of Montfort

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Humfried von Montfort († February 12, 1284 ) was lord of Tire and Beirut .

He was a younger son of Philip of Montfort , Lord of Castres , La Ferté-Alais and Bréthencourt , Tire and Toron, and his second wife, Mary of Antioch-Armenia .

On October 1, 1274 Humfried married Eschiva von Ibelin (* 1253; † 1312), daughter of Johann von Ibelin, Lord of Beirut († 1264) and his wife Alice von La Roche sur l'Ognon. With Eschiva he had seven children:

  • three sons and a daughter, all died young;
  • Amalrich von Montfort († December 28, 1304);
  • Ruben von Montfort († September 8, 1313) ⚭ 1299 Maria von Ibelin († 1340), daughter of Balian von Ibelin († 1302), Seneschal of Cyprus;
  • Alix or Helvis (documented in 1295).

In 1282 his sister-in-law Isabella von Ibelin died and Eschiva inherited the rule of Beirut from her . In 1283 Humfried's brother Johann von Montfort also died . King Hugo I of Jerusalem had previously secured the right to withdraw John's rule Tire to the crown domain, but now allowed Humfried to take possession of it. When Humfried died just six months later, the new King John II finally seized the rule of Tire and gave it to his brother, Amalrich of Tire , presumably because he thought Humfried's sons were too young to effectively defend the rule against the Muslims. The rule of Beirut remained in the possession of Eschiva.
