Helena Roerich (actually Jelena Ivanovna Roerich , born Shaposhnikova , Russian Елена Ивановна Рёрих or Шапошникова ; born January 31, jul. / 12. February  1879 greg. In Saint Petersburg , † 5. October 1955 in Kalimpong , India ) was a Russian writer who published in English.

Life

Roerich was a great-granddaughter of Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov and the niece of the composer Modest Mussorgsky .

On October 28, 1901, she married the Russian artist, scientist and Asia expert Nicholas Roerich . After the October Revolution in 1920 they emigrated to New York via London for Nicholas' first exhibition in the United States. She translated Helena Blavatsky's book The Secret Doctrine into Russian.

She later converted to Buddhism . According to her own statement, she received the writings of Agni Yoga (Western term: living ethics ) from her spiritual guides, the masters of wisdom .

Her eldest son Juri (1902–1960) studied Asia. The younger son Svetoslav (1904–1993) was a painter. After 1923 Helena Roerich lived in the Indian Kullu Valley.
