Jean Georges Baer

Jean Georges Baer (born February 12, 1902 in London , † February 21, 1975 in Neuchâtel ) was a Swiss parasitologist and environmental activist.

Baer studied natural sciences in Neuchâtel, Geneva and Paris . In France he worked with Charles Joyeux . Until his retirement in 1972 he was professor of zoology at the University of Neuchâtel . From 1949 to 1951 he headed the university as rector . Like some scientists from the Neuchâtel Zoological Institute before him, he researched the way of life of animal parasites , including flatworms and tapeworms . His Ecology of Animal Parasites , published in 1951, is considered a classic in this field. He wrote several articles in the Encyclopædia Universalis . A significant part of the parasite collection at the Geneva Nature Museum comes from him .

The Neuchâtel was committed to the Swiss National Fund for the promotion of scientific research and as President of the Swiss National Park Commission .

Jean Georges Baer was Vice President of the International Union of Biologists' Associations and from 1958 to 1963 President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN. During this time he helped found the WWF . For UNESCO he was active in the Galapagos Committee, which checked the effectiveness of the protective measures in place on the Galapagos Islands .

The University of Montpellier awarded him an honorary doctorate.
