Ōku no Himemiko

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ōku no Himemiko ( Japanese 大 来 皇 女 ; * February 12, 661 ; † January 29, 702 ) was the daughter of Temmu Tennō and Princess Ōta and a Japanese poet of the Asuka period . Her brother was Prince Ōtsu (Ōtsu-no-miko).

Life

Her mother died when she was only seven years old. At the age of 13 she became a Saiō , a temple servant in the Ise Shrine , where she served for 13 years and lived in the Saikū , a village 10 km from the shrine. Shortly after Temmu Tennō's death, it was up to her brother, Prince Ōtsu, to succeed him, but he was charged with high treason and executed. At this time Ōku left the Ise shrine and returned to the capital. Nothing is known about her further life until her death at the age of 40.

From Ōku no Himemiko in the poem anthologie Man'yōshū six tanka are preserved, mourning the death of their brother.
