Life

Johanna Maria Melber was the second of five children of the Frankfurt mayor and city ​​school teacher Johann Wolfgang Textor and his wife Anna Maria Lindheimer . Like her older sister Catharina Elisabeth , the mother of Johann Wolfgang Goethe , she did not receive an extensive upbringing, but was married to a respected Frankfurt citizen when she was young. The wedding with the materials dealer Georg Adolf Melber (1725 to 1780) took place on November 11, 1751 in Frankfurt am Main.

Johanna Melber lived with her family in the Zum Esslinger house on the Hühnermarkt in the old town , at that time one of the liveliest squares in Frankfurt. Until it was destroyed on March 22, 1944 by air raids, the building was one of the most famous town houses in Frankfurt. Its remains were torn down in 1950, parts of the baroque facade have been preserved to this day. As part of the Dom-Römer project , the house was rebuilt and presented to the population in May 2018.

In poetry and truth, Goethe described his aunt as lively, warm-hearted and child-friendly. Johanna Melber was the mother of 11 children. When his father had the Goethe house on the Großer Hirschgraben rebuilt in 1755, Johann Wolfgang and his sister Cornelia lived temporarily with their aunt.
