In various parts of Ireland to celebrate Wren Day on Boxing Day , where Saint Stephen (26 December), the Wren (ger .: Wren), where the men dress up with imaginative straw masks, hats and colored robe and accompanied by Céilímusikbands through the cities and parading villages. This tradition exists or has existed in other parts of the British Isles , particularly Wales . This celebration is believed to be of Celtic origin: the druids studied the wren's flight to predict the future. Other sources suggest a Scandinavian influence. It is also assumed that the origin of this festival lies in the Mummers' mummery from the Middle Ages .

procedure

The villains are overwhelmed by the saints in a wild brawl, interspersed with song and dance. However, St. George is murdered, but "The Doctor" brings him back to life with ointment and medicine. At the end, the performers take hold of their hands and perform a series of stripes, with Tom Fool pounding sticks and pigs' bladders on those who come in his way. The participants in this Christmas spectacle are given money and food.
