Hans Bucka (born January 24, 1925 in Dresden ; † February 12, 2011 ) was a German physicist and university professor .

Scientific career

As a student, he published a simple experiment to prove the rotation of the earth in the Zeitschrift für Physik in 1949 :

On November 25, 1954, he received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen with his dissertation on a method for the reorganization of the hyperfine structure terms of the sodium ground state. With his habilitation thesis A triple resonance experiment for the investigation of unresolved double resonance components in the hyperfine structure of excited atomic states from May 8, 1961, he qualified as a professor at the natural science faculty of Heidelberg University .

In 1962 he went to New York for a year , and in 1963 he came to the Technical University of Berlin , where he was appointed to the newly created chair for nuclear physics in the physics department . There he built up the Institute for Nuclear Physics, which he led and shaped as Managing Director. In addition, he dealt with many topics in the field of radiation and particle physics .

He became more widely known as the author of the two standard works Atomkerne und Elementarteilchen (1973) and Nucleon Physics (1981) and as the editor of a nuclide map , which he had even built up as a three-dimensional model in his garden for illustrative purposes.

Hans Bucka was a liaison professor at the German National Academic Foundation for many years . He has also been involved in the selection committee of the Wigner Foundation and as chairman of the research committee of his department for young scientists .

Hans Bucka was a passionate viola player and often performed as a musician in the department of his university.

Hans Bucka found his final resting place in the Zehlendorf cemetery . (Field 018-596)
