Zehlendorf cemetery
The Zehlendorf cemetery is a state-owned cemetery of Berlin in the district of Zehlendorf . Its size is 91,995 m² and the ensemble of the two cemetery chapels is a listed building .
history
It was laid out in 1871 after the churchyard around the Zehlendorf village church had become too small. The first burial took place in January 1871. At the beginning there was only a morgue available in the cemetery, only in 1885, 14 years after the opening, a massive chapel with a morgue was built. This brick building on a rectangular floor plan has neo-Gothic shapes. The architect is not known. The original portal is now walled up. In 1905/06 the cemetery was expanded to the west and in 1910 to the north. Both extensions were carried out by the city gardening director Emil Schubert , who was also buried here. A third expansion of the cemetery took place from 1925, under the direction of Max Dietrich . In 1930/31 a new celebration hall was built in the area of this northern extension. An expressionist brick building was created based on the designs by Erich Schwiertz . In connection with this, a new main entrance was created on Onkel-Tom-Strasse.
War cemetery
On the northern part of the cemetery there is a war cemetery with 600 victims of war and tyranny. It consists of the pillow stones typical of Berlin and a cross about two meters high. Another war cemetery for around 50 victims of the First World War is located south of the celebration hall.
