Kenneth E. Russell (born November 2, 1935 in Fostoria , Ohio , USA - † March 11, 2014 in Walbridge , Ohio, USA) was an American American football player . He played as an offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) with the Detroit Lions .

Player career

Ken Russell attended high school in his hometown and moved to Bowling Green State University in 1953 . There he played for the Bowling Green Falcons College Football on the position of defensive tackle . In 1956 he won the championship in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) with the Falcons , both in 1955 and in 1957 he was selected because of his athletic performance in the league selection. Russell also worked as a wrestler in college and won the MAC Heavyweight Championship in 1957. In the same year he was selected by the Detroit Lions in the sixth round at # 71 out drafted . The Lions put Russell on the offensive line alongside Lou Creekmur and Frank Gatski . As offensive tackle, he had the task of the two quarterbacks of the team - Bobby Layne and Tobin Rote protect, and should describe their own - running backs its way into the opposing end zone free block . Under head coach George Wilson , the Lions managed to win eight of 12 games in Russell's rookie game year. Thus the team from Detroit managed to move into the play-offs , where the team met the San Francisco 49ers and beat them with 31:27. After the career

After his playing career, Ken Russell worked in the transportation industry. Russell was married and had three children. In 1967 he was inducted into the Bowling Green Athletics Hall of Fame from his college .
