The Rudolstädter Vogelschießen is a folk festival in Rudolstadt , Thuringia . The festival developed from a shooting competition, first held on August 28, 1722 , in which a wooden bird was shot with a crossbow . With around 500,000 visitors, it is now one of the most popular folk festivals in Germany and the largest in Thuringia.

The Rudolstadt bird shooting takes place annually in the last full week of August.

The festival took place on the Oberanger until 1952 . Since 1953, the venue has been the Bleichwiese southeast of the city center.

In autumn 2014 the episode Der Irre Iwan was filmed for the crime scene Weimar as part of the folk festival , the episode was first broadcast on January 1, 2015.
