Heinz-Horst Deichmann (born September 30, 1926 in Essen ; † October 2, 2014 ibid) was a German entrepreneur , under whose direction the largest European shoe retail chain Heinrich Deichmann-Schuh was established. Life

Deichmann branch in Essen, Limbecker Platz, in September 2009

Heinz-Horst Deichmann was born in the Borbeck district of Essen as the only son of the shoe retailer Heinrich Deichmann, who still had four daughters. Heinrich Deichmann had founded a shoe shop in 1913, which his wife Julie took over after his early death in 1940. Heinz-Horst Deichmann was drafted in 1943 as a flak helper in World War II; the following year he was sent to the Eastern Front as a soldier. In May 1945 he returned seriously wounded after he had only barely survived a bullet through the throat, and in 1946 graduated from the Borbeck high school in Essen. He then studied Protestant theology in Bonn , among others with Karl Barth , and then medicine in Düsseldorf to become a missionary doctor . In 1951 he completed his studies with the state examination and received his doctorate in 1952. med.

Deichmann initially worked as an orthopedic surgeon before taking over the management of the Heinrich Deichmann-Schuhe family business in 1956. As managing director, he mainly focused on inexpensive shoes. He introduced a new inventory management and presentation system. In the 60s he was the first entrepreneur in the shoe industry to show shoes sorted by size on the shelves and later in the rack room system , which saves staff costs : he kept the shoes in the cardboard box in all available sizes for the customer to immediately reach Salesroom in front. He took over competitors with rapidly increasing sales and profits. In 1999 he handed over management of the company to his son Heinrich Otto Deichmann (* 1962).

Deichmann died on October 2, 2014 at the age of 88 in Essen.

In 2005 Deichmann made 15 million euros available for the victims of the tsunami disaster in South Asia and other aid projects in India and Africa. In addition, he was a patron of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Be'er Scheva ( Israel ), where several buildings are named after him. Deichmann also supported the “High Potential Classix” concert series in which young soloists from the Folkwang University of the Arts present themselves to the public together with guest orchestras. In April 2014, a new teaching and learning center was officially opened at the Essen Medical Faculty, the lecture hall of which was named after Deichmann. Deichmann supported the 16 million euro new building with a large donation.
